Big news, burger fans. Changz Canteen will officially be re-opening as Smoke & Pickles on 29th October 2018.
In Dec 2015, Changz Canteen launched with a small budget and a bric-a-brac approach, starting with only four items on the menu, minimal equipment and minimal furniture. Over the past three years the menu has grown, the equipment multiplied and the restaurant has developed into one of Melbourne’s favourite burger restaurants.
There has been a cycle of constant change and improvement over the years, and this change is going to be the biggest of them all: a rebrand from ‘Changz Canteen’ to ‘Smoke & Pickles’.
Owner and Chef Tom Jacobson says, “Smoke & Pickles gives us the license to inject personality into the menu and venue that we have always flirted with but never really grabbed by the balls, I can’t wait to share the concept and test the waters a bit more.”
Smoke & Pickles is designed to fill a gap in the market – somewhere between local takeaway burger restaurant and casual modern Australian eatery, bringing the two together with a tight menu and fun dine-in experience. That means fresh local produce, independent beers and low intervention wines.
“I’ve always wanted to offer a balanced eating experience,” says Tom. “Something that leaves customers walking away feeling like they’ve treated themselves, but not overdone it. That’s what we’ve always worked towards, and it’s where the concept of Smoke & Pickles originally came from.”
Pickles are traditionally added to dishes as a tool for digestion, to help break down the carbs, fats and proteins in your meal. They’re going to be a big feature of the new restaurant. Smoke & Pickles will have five different pickled options including a watermelon salad with mint & pickled rinds and rotating seasonal pickled specials, so it won’t be hard to walk out feeling fresh.
Smoke will be injected into the menu, but not in the usual way. Tom says it won’t be loads of heavy meats smothered in BBQ sauce. Instead, think smoked beetroot with crispy kale, house cured pastrami with fresh horseradish and Changz’ ever-reliable smoked jalapeno poppers.
The 10-Cheese Croquette will be making a permanent comeback, as well as truffled potato gems (for the people wanting to go down the gluttonous treat path).
As well as a fresher approach to sides, the booze menu will include seasonal batched cocktails, with Smoked Negronis and Pickled Bloody Marys to be the mainstays. They’ve also extended their beer list to include a wider selection of local producers, and called upon a local regular, Mark Sztar from ‘Six Parallels South’ to supply their low intervention wines.
Burger fans, don’t worry—the burger menu is here to stay, along with Changz’ old $1 fried chicken and $10 lunchbox deals. You’ll still be able to make that naughty Friday night take away order.
